This 4-Step Routine Will Make Your Skin a Brick Wall

WINTER’S FRIGID TEMPS, harsh winds, and dry air can really assault your skin barrier. We spoke with skin care experts to learn more about the skin barrier, plus how to rebuild and fortify it in a simple four step process.

“You can liken the skin barrier to a brick wall,” says dermatologist Mona Gohara, M.D. “The skin cells are the bricks and the barrier is the mortar; and when the mortar suffers the wall can crumble.” Dr. Gohara notes there are multiple ways the skin barrier can be weakened, including but not limited to: pollution, UV rays, rough weather, cleansing with harsh cleaning products, overexfoliating, and even shaving.

There are a few signs you can look for to tell if your skin barrier is damaged. “In extreme cases, a weakened skin barrier can lead to eczema,” says Corey L. Hartman M.D. “In milder cases, your skin may be dry, itchy, ashy, or look dull.”

How to Rebuild Your Skin Barrier

The first step you should take to building back your skin barrier is to switch your soap. “Use mild cleansers with as little fragrance as possible,” recommends Dr. Hartman. Look for washes that contain moisturizing glycerin or squalene. Next, adjust your showers. Dr. Gohara says skip barrier-degrading super hot showers. Post-rinse, pat-dry instead of rubbing to avoid aggravating your skin.

Once you revamp how you clean your skin, you then can focus on finding a proper moisturizer. “Use moisturizers with ceramides,” says Dr. Hartman. And apply within three minutes after a shower, when your skin is still wet, so you’ll trap in moisture. In extreme cases of dryness or cracking, top your skin off with occlusive products that further retain moisture, such as Vaseline or Aquaphor ointment.
